One Long Day, in 140 seconds.

My entry for the 2009 Nikon Festival. Though only 140 seconds long I felt this was a great example of one of my long days of working and photographing. While I didn't get picked for the final 50 to compete for the awards I am very proud of my video and it got me out of a creative rut. The video was made with a combination of Flip Mino HD footage along with stop motion shot from my Canon XTi.

Visit the video on Vimeo to watch in HD.

Hope you enjoy!

Friday Photo Links

It's been quite a while since I put together a link post but I'm going to try to get more content up this year and add that to the amazing sites I've found leads to the semi-regular (but not really) Friday Photo Links.

Photoshoot with Chrissy

My friend Chrissy and I enjoy getting together for photo shoots because we often bounce ideas off of each other and generally have a lot of fun. We had planned to do a beach shoot but due to loosing our light and the wind being exceptionally strong we decided to shoot at my house. I set up some of my new Photoflex equipment (still need to write that blog post >.< ) in my living room which isn't very big but we worked around it and got some great shots. I have lots more to process but here are a few of my favorites.

O'Niell Cold Water Classic 2009

Every year the surfers from around the world decend on Santa Cruz California for the US enstallment of the O'Niell Cold Water Classic. Growing up in Santa Cruz I've been going out to watch the surfers in Steamer Lane for many years and for the past few years I've brought my camera and captured images of the event. This year I made it out to the final two days of the event and watched the huge waves along with great surfing with the other Santa Cruz locals.

The winner of the event was 27 year old Nate Yeomans from San Clemente. He bested the other 128 surfers in the 6 Star Prime ASP World Qualifying Series. Nat Young, a Santa Cruz local won the Oakley Pro Junior event. Young won the main event in 2008, as well as the Pro Junior event in 2007. Below you'll find some of my favorite shots from the final rounds of the classic.

Congratulations Nate Yeomans!

Half Moon Bay Photowalk

Prominant blogger Robert Scoble organized a photowalk last week in Half Moon Bay that was part photo walk, part iPhone app exchange. I don't own an iPhone but I wanted to attened anyway to meet other photographers as well as the special guest flying in for the event. Chase Jarvis launched a new iPhone app recently that he calls "the Best Camera" app because he's always said the best camera is the one that's with you. Chase has produced amazing images with his iPhone that I've followed on twitter and facebook and he provides great inspiration to photographers with behind the scenes videos of his professional and personal projects. Below is a video from a discussion with Chase after the photo walk, and I'll have my photos up from the event in the next few days.

Shoot with Rosemary

Here are some of the full shots from the shoot with Rosemary at Wilder Ranch. I love the versatility of the park and it's normally pretty empty so we are free to do what we please.

Shoot with Adrienne

I did this shoot a while ago with my friend Adrienne and I'm finally posting it. She's just my friend and didn't have any experience with modeling so we just had some fun and made some nice pictures for her. Though I think now playground spring seats are a new staple for photo shoots.

Rosemary's Wilder Ranch Shoot

I recently got together with Rosemary to do a shoot out at Wilder Ranch. I had not been out to the park for a shoot in quite some time but there many locations and inspirations all over the park so we had a great time. Here's a quick animato video of some of the key shots.

Way Behind

I've fallen way behind in my photography this past month. Family health issues, my own sickness, and a bad case of laziness has led to a big lack of productivity. I've got a few shoots lined up in the coming weeks, and I had one with a friend last week that I'll post about soon. I think I'm over my lack of motivation, and a camping trip I have planned this weekend will help too. I love taking pictures, but it's good to take a break every now and then.

2nd Annual Worldwide Photowalk

Scott Kelby organized this 2nd Annual Worldwide Photowalk which saw a huge increase in participation for this sophmore outing. According to the official web site there were 900 cities and 32,600 photographers out in the streets taking pictures together. I joined the Adobe sponsered group in San Jose California that was lead by Bryan O’Neil Hughes. Bryan is Photoshop Product Manager and after we walked around the nearby area in downtown San Jose we met back at the Adobe building and got a chance to shoot from the view decks. Afterwards we were treated to some food and drinks while Bryan gave us a brief Lightroom walkthrough. I have been using Lightroom for a long time now but I still learned a few new things and it was also nice to hear why things were the way they were. I also found out what the difference between Vibrance and Saturation, which always puzzeled me. Here are a few of my shots from the day. I haven't decided which of the two I will submit for the contest but I'll make a post about those two when I decide.
